Saturday we met our friends Andy, Jessica, AnnaLea, and Caleb Chambers at Lemon Meringue at Renaissance. We had scheduled the kids a portrait session there in a cute set up of Santa's workshop. Of course the only one that cooperated was baby Caleb, at 2 months of age! Reece pitched an absolute fit, but we finally got a shot of him without a crying face. Oh, my child! Anyway, after a lunch at Sweet Peppers Deli, we headed to pick up Ridley at the house. He had a playdate at Lakeshore Park on the Reservoir. We met Zeke, the weimeraner, and his mommy Amy and two friends David and Bethany. We met Zeke and Amy at our puppy classes at Petsmart. Zeke seems to remember his "manners" a little better than Ridley. Oh well, we'll work on it. The pups had a blast running around chasing bubbles and frisbees. Reece thought they were hysterical. He just cackled at them constantly. Needless to say, he enjoyed himself thoroughly.

Over the weekend, Reece developed a nasty cough and wheezing. I'm taking him to Dr. Denney this afternoon to find out what's going on with our little man. I feel so terrible when he's sick. I'll let you know how it turns out! Other than that, starting Wednesday, Daddy will be home with us until the day after Thanksgiving. We have big plans to put up Christmas decorations and get Reece's picture for our Christmas card. I have a lot to live up to based on last year's card, and I can already tell you, nothing will be that good. Reece is waaaay too mobile now. I'll be doing good to get a still shot!

What is Escobar Syndrome?

This is all according to our geneticist.

Escobar Syndrome, or Multiple Pterygium Syndrome, is a form of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita. It is an autosomal recessive genetic condition characterized by excessive skin webbing, joint contractures, and scoliosis. Other features include intrauterine death, congenital respiratory distress, short stature, craniofacial dysmorphism, ptosis, low set ears, and cryptorchidism in males. The gene mutations are caused by transient inactivation of the neuromuscular end plate. In other words that are not much more clear, Reece did not start moving properly in the womb until his gamma receptor on his neuromuscular junction was replaced with the epsilon receptor (toward the end of the pregnancy). Severity varies significantly among families. Early physical therapy and surgical interventions can help the outcome.

So what applies to Reece? Well, Reece's features are as follows:

* Bilateral vertical tali in feet (surgery May 2008, January 2011)

* Knee flexion contractures (surgery May 2009)

* Hip contractures

* Mild scoliosis

* Short stature

(7 years: 45 inches)

* Short, webbed neck

* Cryptorchidism (undescended testicles) (surgery Feb.2009)

* Inguinal hernias (surgery Feb. 2009)

* Hypospadias (surgery Feb. 2009)

* Low set ears

*Ptosis (droopy eyelids) (surgery March 2009 and October 2013)

* Partial cleft palate (surgery March 2009) (fistula repaired October 2011)

* Wrist flexion contractures (surgery on right October 2010) (surgery on left June 2011)

* Radial and ulnar bones fused at the elbow in both arms with webbing and joint contractures (surgery on right elbow contractures via biceps lengthening and z plasty) May 2015)

* Thumb in palm (surgery on right October 2010) (surgery on left June 2011)

*Finger contractures

I have debated for a very long time whether or not to post all of this on here. It's very hard for me to sit here and list all of my baby's abnormalities. Plus, I don't want people looking at Reece trying to pinpoint every feature of Escobar on him. However, I'm getting more and more connected with other Escobar families around the world. I know that any information I find is very helpful, so I want to maybe help other families affected by this syndrome.

An Essay that Touched Me

I don't think that I am a patron Saint, but the words of this essay really struck something with me. It helps me to remember that God has chosen me and Nick to be Reece's parents for a very special reason.

The Special Mother

Most women become mothers by accident, some by choice, a few by social pressures and a couple by habit.

This year nearly 100,000 women will become mothers of handicapped children. Did you ever wonder how mothers of handicapped children are chosen?

Somehow I visualize God hovering over earth selecting his instruments for propagation with great care and deliberation. As He observes, He instructs His angels to make notes in a giant ledger.

"Armstrong, Beth; son. Patron saint...give her Gerard. He's used to profanity."

"Forrest, Marjorie; daughter. Patron saint, Cecelia."

"Rutledge, Carrie; twins. Patron saint, Matthew."

Finally He passes a name to an angel and smiles, "Give her a handicapped child."

The angel is curious. "Why this one God? She's so happy."

"Exactly," smiles God, "Could I give a handicapped child to a mother who does not know laughter? That would be cruel."

"But has she patience?" asks the angel.

"I don't want her to have too much patience or she will drown in a sea of self-pity and despair. Once the shock and resentment wears off, she'll handle it."

"I watched her today. She has that feeling of self and independence that is so rare and so necessary in a mother. You see, the child I'm going to give her has her own world. She has to make her live in her world and that's not going to be easy."

"But, Lord, I don't think she even believes in you." God smiles, "No matter, I can fix that. This one is perfect - she has just enough selfishness." The angel gasps - "selfishness? is that a virtue?"

God nods. "If she can't separate herself from the child occasionally, she'll never survive. Yes, here is a woman whom I will bless with a child less than perfect. She doesn't realize it yet, but she is to be envied. She will never take for granted a 'spoken word'". She will never consider a "step" ordinary. When her child says 'Momma' for the first time, she will be present at a miracle, and will know it!"

"I will permit her to see clearly the things I see...ignorance, cruelty, prejudice....and allow her to rise above them. She will never be alone. I will be at her side every minute of every day of her life, because she is doing My work as surely as if she is here by My side".

"And what about her Patron saint?" asks the angel, his pen poised in mid-air.

God smiles, "A mirror will suffice."
